The makers of Ubuntu Linux say that Ubuntu is supposed to be so easy to use your grandma can use it. Well, though I like Ubuntu (in its latest Dapper form) it is very complicated to install codecs and things like that. Mp3 is not preinstalled! If your’e a grandma and like to use your computer as a music machine - choose Windows  or  Mac.  Ubuntu is a great system in many ways, but not if your’e a music lover….

Music Lockers

We’re in the beginning of something close to a revolution on the world wide web. Recent year has been a race for the ultimate web application. We have seen Gmail, Writely, IRows, which promise a life without the nerve-racking PC environments of today. In a few years - or more - I hope I can choose Mac, Windows or Linux without having to think about application compability, driver problems and things like that. I long for the day the computer is only a door to the Internet.

The concept of Music Lockers is defenitly going in that direction. A Music Locker is a place on the Interent where you store your music collection. Today you might use it to sync your music devices. Tomorrow when most Internet connections are Wireless, you can play the music directly from your Music Locker from any device. With todays Music Lockers you can do that to the PC, tomorrow to your phone and the day after tomorrow directly in the car stereo. The Music Lockers I’ve tested works quite well to be first generation applications (I think): MP3Tunes and Streamload Mediamax. MP3Tunes cost under 40 dollar a year and has syncing with iTunes. It works well if you don’t use the advanced functions. Streamload is broader and works for storing all kind of files. You can store 25 GB with their free account.
